Cabin Outdoor Living Space

The key to this design is the dimensions and logistics to fit the needs of the design into all the infrastructure and trees at the build location. Added topo in 3D allowed the client to see the grade of the build site and how the fireplace would go all the way to the grade with a small storage closet under the firebox. Detailed 2D framing plans were provided for the new deck, roof and fireplace and this allowed the clients to confirm how they needed to build this addition onto their existing cabin.

The client contacted us through a common relation and asked if we would be willing to design them a redo of the rear of their cabins decks and add a fireplace. The original antique log cabin had been built in 1999 and the rear deck attached to the home had been repaired but the flow was not ideal for how the new owners had hoped to entertain and enjoy the outdoors. We went over the questionnaire for outdoor spaces and residential remodel and it quickly became apparent that the client had done their homework and knew what they wanted. My task was to provide them with a new layout for the rear deck and incorporate an area to place a grill, access from the front of the homes yard for security of the deck access and to provide for a fireplace area which would face the existing home.

The challenges on this project were that the owners loved the cabin for how it was “in the woods” and were very adamant about keeping all the trees they could and still get the layout they desired.  As an added service, I met them on site and did take offs of the existing structure, and documented trees they wanted to keep and made sure we had the clearance necessary to not disturb the root systems of the trees they wanted to keep.  During this visit, we collaboratively came up with a plan that would satisfy all the needs and wants and keep the deck off the setbacks, the septic field and keep the most significant shade canopy trees. Next task was to do the design and show it to them in 3D and 2D.

The result of the design was exactly what the clients had hoped for. Creative roof lines tying back into the existing structure with an added side covered porch brought it all together. In addition to the design, the client asked me to do the framing details as close to what I thought the builder would need. The builder will still go to a structural engineer for working drawings, but now the owners have plans they can shop a builder with and get competitive prices for the build.
